Image is of Davenport Shoemaker of Company B, 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He wears a dark civilian frock coat with cloth covered buttons open to reveal dark vest and matching dark trousers.

Contrast and clarity are good. Mount has clipped corners. Mount and paper have minor surface dirt. Bottom of the mount has a period ink ID of “D. SHOEMAKER”

Reverse has a partial period ink inscription that reads “EX MEMBER OF CO. B 52ND PENN. VOLS.” Reverse also has a loose canceled 2 cent tax stamp.

Davenport Shoemaker enlisted in the 52nd Pennsylvania on October 11, 1861 and was mustered out on November 5, 1864 on the expiration of his term of service.

Nothing is known of his post-war life.

The 52nd Pennsylvania was organized on October 7, 1861. After spending a few months in the Army of the Potomac the regiment was moved to the Charleston area where it spent most of its service. They saw action on the Peninsula with Keys 4th Corps with their heaviest action being at Fair Oaks. After moving south, they served at Battery Gregg, Charleston, Fort Johnson, where they lost heavily in captured, James Island, Johns Island, Fort Putnam and Fort Wagner.    [ad][ph:L]
