Chest-up CDV identified as David A. Wasim of Company B, 143rd New York. He wears a dark frock coat with 1st lieutenant shoulder straps and a dark felt collar. Pinned to his left breast is the star of the 20th Corps. The badge consists of a star in the center of a circle with the center of the star colored with enamel.

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Mount has clipped corners but it and the paper are clean.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for R. A. LEWIS… NEW YORK with a canceled 2 cent tax stamp. Reverse also has a modern pencil ID and a notation that the image is from the album of Captain Jirah Young. ID is confirmed by other online images.

David Augustus Wasim was born in Rosendale, New York on January 10, 1836. He enlisted as a corporal in Company B, 143rd New York at Liberty on August 13, 1862. He was promoted to sergeant on April 15, 1863, 1st sergeant on an undisclosed date, commissioned 2nd lieutenant of Company A on April 15, 1865 and 1st lieutenant (not mustered) July 24, 1865. He was mustered out at Washington, D.C. on July 20, 1865.

After the war David returned to Liberty where he led the Liberty Cornet Band and was active in the GAR and the Odd Fellows.

Wasim died in Liberty on March 19, 1884 leaving a wife and four children. He was buried in Liberty Cemetery.  [ad][ph:L]
