This CDV shows a waist-up view of General John B. Magruder in his full military regalia. This image is a copy of an earlier image which has been enlarged to show the waist-up view. Because of this, the quality of the photograph is a bit grainy and dark, making the details a bit difficult to see.

The backmark of this image is Vannerson & Jones, the great Richmond photographer. A two-cent cancelled tax stamp is present, but some of the stamp has fallen away. There are pencil notations on the reverse, one at the top, which reads “Magruder,” and a collector’s mark which notes that it was once part of the Bill Turner portion of the Ray Richey collection of images.

John Bankhead Magruder was born May 1, 1807 in Port Royal, Virginia. He graduated from West Point in 1830 and was three times brevetted for gallant and meritorious conduct as an artillery officer in the Mexican War. Magruder resigned from the Army on April 20, 1861 and was appointed brigadier general in the Confederate Army on June 17, 1861 and major general the following October. Magruder had quite the flair for the dramatic, but he is best known for delaying General McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign at Yorktown. He was later assigned to the District of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. After the Civil War he fled to Mexico and joined the French Imperial forces there under Maximilian. After the fall of the French government in Mexico Magruder returned to his home in Houston, Texas. He died a poor man on February 18, 1871.
