This very nice Carte-de-Visite image features a standing view of General Winfield Scott “The Superb” Hancock. The image is mounted to a common card with a double-lined, black border. The empty card space beneath the photo is labeled “Gen. Hancock” in scripted, faded pencil. The edges and corners of the photo card are sharp, with some minor rounding of the corners of the card.
The reverse is clean, with a penciled “Gen. Hancock E. 2. Y. (?)” and a photographer’s stylized back mark logo reads “Published by / E. ANTHONY / 501 Broadway / New York / FROM PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE / in / BRADY’S / National Portrait Gallery.” A small penned series of numbers at low right also read as “9170”. Overall measurements are 2.45” x 4”.
An excellent and important piece for the collector of fine Civil War images. [cm] [ph:L]
