This CDV may be unique, in that it features a few of the more obscure men to fill the ranks – drummers of the 144th New York Infantry. A cursory search of the image reveals no other examples. The 144th served primarily along the Atlantic Coast during the Civil War, with service on Hilton Head, Morris, and Folly Islands and participation in battles from Fort Wagner through Honey Hill during Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign.
Some intrepid research may narrow down the three men in this image, but they are quite clearly musicians in dress and accoutrement. The image is mounted to a plain card – both the image and card have sharp edges and corners. The reverse features a period ink notation reading “Drummers on a “Spree” 144th NYV. Infy.” while the remainder is unmarked.
An exceptional and neat CDV, with what is most likely an inscription written by one of the photo’s subjects during a moment of levity. [cm] [ph:L]
