Dabney Maury led a fascinating life. He achieved a career in the US Army and eventually rose to the rank of Major General in the Confederate Army. After the Civil War, he founded a school in Virginia, helmed a failed business venture in New Orleans, and founded the Southern Historical Society.
The image features a etching portrait of Maury and is mounted to a common card with a double gold line border pattern. Edges and corners are sharp, with only very minor superficial imperfections in the gold gilt bordering. The name “Maury” is penciled across the image at low center. The reverse is clean, with another penciled “Maury” and two canceled stamps, dated August 11, 1865.
Images of Maury are quite scarce, making this an exciting piece for the collector of fine Civil War and Confederate photographs. [cm] [ph:L]
