Dr. Lohman is featured in a standing pose, with full medical regalia. The carte-de-visite image is mounted to a plain card with only very minor edge wear. The reverse is blank with mild discoloration along the low edge and a spot stain at top. In pencil is written “Dr. Lohman” with faint penciled notations partially reading “7th Pa Res.” Dr. Lohman is almost certainly not the ID, as the only plausible match is an officer from California with no connection to the medical field. Several “Doctor Lohmans” practiced medicine in the years following the Civil War without having served.
Given the partial notation and the photo being credited elsewhere as a 7th PA Reserves photo, the man featured is likely Surgeon J. Lander Bishop, Assistant Surgeon (and later Surgeon of the 8th PA Reserves) Thomas Jones, or Dr. Michael Steck.
A rare medical officer photograph with opportunities for further research – a prime piece for the collector. [cm][ph:L]
