A seated, three-quarter view carte de visite of John Huidekoper of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. He wears a single-breasted officer's frock coat with lieutenant's shoulder straps and a watch chain, and he has a full chin beard. Backmark: Whipple, 96 Washington Street, Boston.

Huidekoper enlisted on June 21, 1861, as a sergeant in Co. C, 34th Pennsylvania (5th Pennsylvania Reserves). He was discharged for promotion on October 30, 1862, and was commissioned second lieutenant of Co. E, 150th Pennsylvania, the next day. Regimental records show him detached to the staff of Gen. Abner Doubleday.

The 150th Pennsylvania was one of the "Bucktail" regiments. Col. Langhorne Wister raised it in Philadelphia and Harrisburg in September 1862, and it went straight to the defenses of Washington. Company K was detached as President Lincoln's bodyguard for the rest of the war, including during his stays at the Soldiers' Home. The rest of the regiment joined the Army of the Potomac in February 1863 and served in the First Corps. On July 1 at Gettysburg, Doubleday sent the brigade into the exposed line along the Chambersburg Pike, a position he later called the key point of the first day's fighting. Every field officer of the regiment was wounded there, and it lost 53 killed and mortally wounded, 134 wounded, and 77 missing. Lt. Col. Henry S. Huidekoper and Cpl. J. Monroe Reisinger both received the Medal of Honor. In 1864 the regiment moved to the Fifth Corps, serving for a time in Joshua L. Chamberlain's brigade, and it was mustered out in June 1865.

The reverse has a period pencil inscription: "John Huidekoper, 2d Lieut., 150th P.V., A.D.C. on staff of Gen. ..." The general's name runs off the trimmed right edge. This is an identified image of a Pennsylvania staff officer, with service in both the Reserves and the Bucktails.

Condition: Stray pencil marks in the upper left background and a few dark spots in the right background, away from the sitter. Light scattered spotting on the coat. The inscription on the reverse is faint and trimmed at the right edge. Clear image on a clean mount. Very good overall.    [ss] [ph:L]
