This is a carte de visite (CDV) photograph. It is a vignetted bust of Charles Hamlin. He wears a faux double-breasted military frock coat with a standing collar and officer’s shoulder straps. Detail and contrast remain good. The back carries the photographer’s imprint: “GARDNER, (Corner 7th & D Sts.) WASHINGTON, D.C.” This is the studio of Alexander Gardner, who left Mathew Brady’s employ and opened his own Washington gallery at that address in 1863. Condition of the piece remains very fine.
Charles Hamlin (1837–1911) of Maine was the son of Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln’s first vice president (1861–1865). He entered service in 1862 as a major in the 18th Maine Infantry (later reorganized as the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery) and then became an assistant adjutant general of volunteers, serving on division staffs in the Army of the Potomac. That included service at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He received a brevet (honorary) promotion to brigadier general near the war’s end. After the war he returned to law in Bangor, stayed active in veterans’ organizations, and was involved in commemorating Maine’s role at Gettysburg. [jet] [ph:L]
