Very crisp CDV of an unidentified Union lieutenant posed with his hands resting on his drawn sword in front of him. The subject wears a dark frockcoat with shoulder straps and light trousers. At his waist is his sash and sword belt with a Pattern 1851 NCO belt plate and empty scabbard. His hands rest on top of a Model 1850-foot officer’s sword with engraved blade. The clarity of the image is so good that the details of the blade’s etching are visible.
The subject is posed next to a marble top table which holds his dark forage cap with infantry hunting horn insignia on the front with the regimental number “29” clearly visible.
As already stated, clarity and contrast are excellent as is usually the case on a Brady image. Paper and mount are also very good.
Reverse has photographer’s imprint for BRADY’S … NEW YORK. [ad] [ph:L]
