The unidentified subject is posed leaning on his drawn Model 1840 Light Artillery saber. He wears a dark slouch hat with cord and crossed cannons with a number “9” at center on the front, dark frockcoat with 1st lieutenant of artillery shoulder straps and light trousers with a thin dark leg stripe. At his waist is his sash and belt with rectangular plate and empty metal scabbard attached. He also wears gauntlets.
Contrast and clarity are excellent as are the paper and mount.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for GEO. S. FOX… TROY, N.Y. Bottom also has a hand cancelled tax stamp dated “ON MAY 9.” This dates the image between 1864 and 1866. [AD] [PH:L]
