This is a full standing, studio view of a Union soldier leaning on a sword and smoking a long-stemmed pipe. He wears striped trousers and a short “shell” jacket. He may be in the artillery as the piping on his coat does not stand out as I suspect yellow (cavalry) piping would. He has a non-regulation slouch hat on his head.

The mount has been trimmed on top and bottom. There is a blue revenue stamp on the back but no photographer’s b/m.

Clear with good contrast.  [jet][ph:L]
