This is a nice, clear 6th plate ambrotype of a Confederate private in an issue jacket. He is seated beside a table on which he rests his elbow. The table comes up rather high on his side. He wears a gray jacket with shoulder tabs. Five large brass buttons, lightly tinted by the photographer show on his lapel. Others are certainly hidden lower down. He wears a pair of trousers matching his jacket in tone. His hair is cut short and the photographer has thinly tinted his cheeks red.

The remarkable thing is how he seems to be swimming in the jacket. The collar hangs down low enough to show his shirt collar and rolled tie. It might be a case of a “size one man issued a size four jacket,” but you can’t help wondering if he is headed back to the field after a hospital stay. He certainly does not look happy. The jacket seems to be Richmond Type-II, with shoulder straps but no branch of service trim. It could be a privately made copy, but then one would expect a better fit.

The image is clear and has only the slightest bit of solarization at the top. It is housed in a leatherette case separated at the hinge. The case is very nice, has purple velvet facing pad, an openwork clasp and is gilt blindstamped, “B. Leaver / Artist / 31 Market Street / Manchester,” which could indicate an English made case. The photograph, however, is purely Confederate and from the collection of the late Bill Turner, noted Virginia collector and dealer. [sr] [ph:m]
