These two sixth plate, very clear ambrotype images of Confederate soldiers are unidentified but are nicely paired in a double thermoplastic case. The image on the left is tintype and shows a young man with a thin, full chin beard seated, with one arm on a table, wearing a gray jacket with dark standing collar. His cheeks have been slightly tinted red. He shows off a cloth lanyard around his neck for his pocket watch, tucked in one of two breast pockets midway down his jacket. His jacket has an interesting button arrangement: eight buttons grouped loosely by twos. He has a somewhat amused look on his face.

His companion is also shown in a seated view in a sixth plate image, but as a ruby ambrotype. His cheeks and lips have been lightly tinted red. He appears to look up slightly at the camera. He is also posed seated with one arm on a table. Seven buttons show on the front of his coat, which seems to be a frock rather than a jacket, but his arm resting across his lap blocks a complete view to tell for sure.

These images come from the collection of the late Bill Turner, noted Virginia collector and dealer. They are cased in thermoplastic figural case with a leaf and berry design. The face and back are good, but the case has cracks on the left edge of the right image at the hinges. The images are very clear and complete with glass, mat and frames. [sr] [ph:m]
