This crystal clear ambrotype shows a young boy posed wearing a cap and holding what seem to be a very fashionable thin walking stick. He is fashionably attired in open jacket, fastened only at the top, and having scalloped lapels, bottom edge, cuffs, and having scalloped trouser seams as well. This is from the collection of the late Bill Turner, noted Virginia collector and dealer, and is identified as Edwin C. Hendry. Our best guess is that this is Edwin Hendry, son of Charles and Annie Hendry of Philadelphia, who is picked up in the 1860 census as age 5, which would be about right for the date of the image and age of the boy, though there are a few other suspects, such as Edwin Hendry of Lock Haven, PA., born about 1854. In any case, this is a charming image of a young boy of the Civil War period, housed in a leatherette case. The condition is superb. We note that he is standing either on a rug or table cover, it being very likely the photographer and proud parents raised him up rather than trying to get the camera to floor level. It is housed in nice leatherette case embossed with floral and geometric designs, with glass, mat, frame and facing pad in place.
