This 6th plate ambrotype is quite wonderful in showing a real Confederate cavalry trooper much as Hollywood liked to portray him. In fact, this is one of those images that excites loud comments from re-enactors complaining that if they showed up at an event looking like that, they would be kicked out as inauthentic.
Our man is posed standing next to a table, shown from the knees up, resting one hand on the table cover. He wears a forage cap with light colored top, and a dark band around the base rising to a point in front. Most unusually, he has posed with his chinstrap down and under his chin, exactly as they were meant to be worn when riding or in a stiff breeze to keep them on one’s head. A greater sin, or wished-for miracle for a movie costume designer, is that he not only does not wear a jacket, but allows the camera to get a full view of his suspenders, worn over a dark shirt that has two slanted breast pockets and shows four light colored buttons with a fifth likely hiding behind a huge cravat tied with a large bow and wide, long ends touching his suspenders.
To complete his outfit he wears his sword belt with a two-piece interlocking belt buckle. The photographer tinted it just enough to obscure the detail, but the belt is a typical CS sword belt, the central part of the plate likely showed a CS, and there is a round forward carrying ring attached by a short billet to the lower edge of the belt for the forward saber sling and what seems to be his long rear saber sling brought forward and fastened to keep it from dangling behind him when not carrying his saber.
The image has super content and great clarity. There are a few small spots and some shading, but nothing distracting. The only thing we might consider a flaw is a tiny dot of solarization in the corner of one eye. The case is figural thermoplastic case showing a music lesson on both sides and is in good condition. The image is matted, glassed and framed. The facing pad is in place. [sr] [ph:m]
