This young Confederate wears a gray shell jacket with shoulder tabs, a low, standing collar, and showing nine small buttons. It is likely a Richmond Depot product, fitting the specifications for a Type-III jacket. He has kept his broad-brimmed hat on, but has pushed it back slightly to avoid casting a shadow and gives us a very clear view of his face. He sports a narrow, well-groomed mustache that does not hide his youth, which the photographer somewhat emphasizes by the red tinting of his cheeks.
The image is extremely clear and is a wonderful portrait of early war southern volunteer. The format is a sixth-plate ambrotype and it is housed in a nice embossed leatherette case with some minor wear to the edges, but reddish velvet facing pad, glass, frame and floral embossed mat in place. There is a slight ring of solarization around the perimeter, next to the mat, but it only crosses the figure lower down across the forearms and lower abdomen from about the third button. [sr] [ph:L]
