VERY ATTRACTIVE DOUBLE CASED SIXTH-PLATE AMBROTYPES OF CIVILIAN AND CONFEDERATE SOLDIER IN A RARE UNION CASE

$3,000.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 1138-1975

The relationship between the two men pictured is not known but no doubt they are either brothers or the same man at different points in his life.

The left side ambrotype is of a seated man sporting a closely trimmed beard and mustache wearing a dark civilian suit with white shirt and a rather large dark bowtie. His coat appears to be held closed by a single thong passing across the center of his chest. He also has a handkerchief stuffed into a breast pocket. His cheeks and lips are tinted red.

The contrast and clarity of the image are excellent. Mat is of plain brass with a beaded border and is stamped “POWERS.” Stamped brass frame is also present.

The right side ambrotype is of a seated Confederate soldier wearing a goatee. He is dressed in a light-colored forage cap with a gold gilt boarder around the edge of the disc, gilt side buttons and a thin line of gilt under the chinstrap. He also wears a light-colored shell jacket with matching trousers and vest. The jacket has gilt buttons down the front and on the cuffs. There is a hint of gilt around the base of the collar and the epaulettes are edged with dark piping. The vest also has gilt buttons.

Again, the contrast and clarity are excellent. Photo has decorative brass mat and stamped brass frame.

Images are housed in a rather rare Union case with a raised decoration titled “BOBBY SHAFTO” based on a nursery rhyme of the period. The case depicts a young boy in a sailboat holding a rudder and looing up toward a star while beneath him is a shield with an anchor. All is surrounded by scroll work. Case has a repair to the lower left corner on one side and a small chip near the catch.

From the collection of the late William A. Turner. [ad] [ph:L]
