GEM SIZED TINTYPE OF ID’D CONFEDERATE SOLDIER

$650.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1138-1098

This gem sized tintype is attached to a CDV sized mount with a paper frame. The image is a bust view of a young Confederate soldier who looks to be between his late teens and early twenties wearing a light-colored shell jacket with a low collar.

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper and mount are good. Written in modern pencil across the bottom of the image is the ID of “GEORGE ALEXANDER GOODWIN.”

Reverse has a paper’s label with a photographer’s imprint for C. CAMPBELL AT MINNIS’ GALLERY… RICHMOND, VA. There is also some collector information in pencil.

Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner.

We were able to find a George Goodwin who enlisted at Richmond in Company A, 8th Virginia Infantry. However, records show this soldier was 31 years old and much older than the soldier in the photo. There was also a George A. Goodwin in the 29th Mississippi but at 36, he is also too old. Perhaps the next owner could nail down a proper ID with more time. [ad][ph:L]
