Here we have a nice half plate tintype of a cavalryman and his dark chestnut horse posing for the camera outside; there are trees and a building off to the side of a road in the background. The horse soldier holds his cavalry sabre, blade upright, over his shoulder. He wears a cavalry shell jacket adorned with shoulder scales; a P1855 enlisted belt and buckle cinch up his sky-blue trousers. The quintessential over-the-knee cavalry boots, equipped with spurs, rest in stirrups. Atop his head sits a pork pie hat. He is a striking figure as he gazes in the distance.

His horse, likely a Morgan, is outfitted with the usual tack. The soldier has used a checkered riding blanket under the saddle. The bit appears to have been gilted at the horse’s mouth.

This image comes housed in half of a leatherette case and is complete with glass, mat, and keeper. There is peeling of the emulsion on the tin and it has begun to rust along the bottom of the photograph. This image has light contrast at the top and fades to darker down the image. The cavalryman is bright and the details are easily seen despite the distance from the camera. There is spotting throughout the image. Nothing exists behind the image when taken out of the case.

Overall, this is a great image of a cavalryman in the field.  [cla] [ph:L]
