This fellow has likely just signed up in a local cavalry unit and has not yet gotten a uniform, but has taken his saber to the photographer for a portrait before going off to war. He is bareheaded, has a narrow chin beard, and wears a double-breasted coat, likely a civilian garment whose buttons the photographer has militarized by adding a touch of gold. He holds the hilt of a cavalry saber forward, however, to make clear he has joined the army. The photographer lightly gilded the brass guard and pommel cap of the saber also, but the black leather grip shows plainly. A simple roller buckle on the waist belt clearly points to a southern origin, as does the shoulder support belt, which uses a snap hook of some sort, though they may have turned the belt upside down and rearranged the long sling to create the proper orientation of gear for the image.

The photo is a ninth-plate tintype housed in a figural thermoplastic case with floral motifs and a Littlefield, Parsons & Co. advertising liner in the back. The facing pad, glass, mat and frame are in place. This nicely shows the first steps in the making of a southern cavalry trooper who dominated his northern counterparts for at least the first two years of the war.  [sr][ph:m]
