SECTIONED U.S. 3” PARROTT SHELL -- CHANCELLORSVILLE

$225.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1052-59A

Offered here is an excellent half of an excavated Union artillery shell; sectioned to show the contents.  This is an iron, 3” artillery shell that was intended to be fired from a 10-pounder Parrott rifle or 3” ordnance rifle.

This is the explosive “shell” that was filled only with powder. All parts are clearly visible and perfectly illustrate the anatomy of a Parrott shell: iron sabot, zinc fuse adaptor, paper time fuse, and cast-iron body.

This item was excavated so the exterior iron surface is pitted and rusty. Sabot, fuse, and even the remains of a paper time fuse are in good shape.

Recovered from Chancellorsville, VA.

This shell is an excellent display piece or educational tool, as well as an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection. [jet] [ph:L]
