CS ovals in any condition are scarce. This one was recovered in Orange, Va. This has the thin letter style CS and the gray remains of its lead solder fill show a brown, horizontal “Y” that is likely the stain of an oxidized iron wire set of hooks, both which are associated the Virginia style oval CS plates associated with the Army of Northern Virginia.
The brass face is a light brown and shows cracks, wrinkles and flattening, and the lead fill is partially gone. See Mullinax (1991) Plates 116 and following for discussion of these plates and variations of the style that were meant to be counterpoints to the US Model 1839 plates worn so widely by Union forces.
