Item is the blade only of a Model 1816 bayonet protruding through a block of wood.
Bayonet is the blade section only with the socket being snapped off long ago. Blade is full length and has been painted gold to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the battle.
The block of wood meas. 4.75 inches long x 2.00 inches at its widest. Wood is still tightly attached to the blade.
With the item is a late 19th early 20th century worn tag that reads “END OF A BAYONET FOUND IN A TREE NEAR DUNKER CHURCH ANTIETAM”
This item came with several others from a defunct GAR Post in Connecticut and all had the same blue colored tag with similar script. Tag is torn along the edges with a split at center but is otherwise complete. [ad] [ph:L]
