This is a very nice example of a .54 caliber “Vicksburg” rifle bullet. Pointy with two grooves, this bullet has a cone cavity and was side cast. Very nice, smooth patina. Small nick on one side.
The “country” and “Kentucky” rifles with larger bores that were collected to be used by the state forces were bored and re-rifled to .54 caliber and became known as “Vicksburg” rifles. These side-cast projectiles were made at the Nashville Arsenal.
These are often erroneously called “Suhl” rifle bullets by some collectors.
This is a very nice specimen. [jet] [ph:jet]
