Item is the oval Pattern 1839 cartridge box plate.
Face has a good strong “US” and is free of dings, dents, or scratches. The patina is spotty with a mix of lights and darks and a small smattering of oxidation.
Reverse has 100% of the lead fill but no attachment loops. Digger has marked the plate in white ink with “U. S. CIVIL WAR CARTRIDGE BOX PLATE FOUND NEAR ‘BLOODY POND’ AT SHILOH BATTLEFIELD.” The inscription is repeated in black ink under the white.
We do not get relics from Shiloh often and when we do they are usually not marked with a location on the battlefield. This is a chance to get a nice relic from a prime location. [AD] [ph:L]
