Regulation M1839 oval US infantry belt plate from Antietam. Brown patina at center mixed with grayish white along the edges. Well defined letters with small dings. Edge bumps at bottom center. Reverse shows thin light brown over medium dart gray mixed with whitish gray spots. Some shallow loss of fill at bottom center. Studs and belt hook in place. The studs are stubby arrowheads. These are known to have been introduced by some makers in 1862, with Emerson Gaylord by April 1863 referring to the rounded studs as the “old style.” There is some residue under the lower stud that looks like the remains of the leather belt.
