This is an excavated example of a Confederate-made musket socket bayonet.  Measuring approximately 21” overall with a 2 ¾” socket.  This was made for an early .69 caliber musket with a bayonet lug mounted on the bottom of the barrel; as the bridge in on the top of the socket and the channel turns to the left.  The crude, 18” long triangular blade is unfluted and unmarked. The tip of the blade has been curled to make it into a pot hook.

In relic condition, the metal is pitted.  This piece has been cleaned and is very stable. Locking ring remains on the socket.

A rare specimen of a Confederate-made socket bayonet.  [jet][ph:L]
