This is an excavated infantry cap insignia in the shape of a French horn.  Made of stamped brass.  Measures approx. 3 1/2” wide.  In nice, solid “dug” condition. No loops remain on back.

Item is from the collection of Gill Barrett.

The 71st New York was part of the famous Excelsior Brigade and saw action on the Peninsula, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.

Recovered in the location of a camp of the 71st New York Infantry in Doncaster, MD.  Doncaster is not far from Port Tobacco, MD, where the regiment saw action in June, 1861.  [ld][ph:L]
