Item Code: 2025-194

This regulation US cartridge box plate was recovered on the battlefield of Pine Mountain, also known as Pine Knob, fought June 14-15 as part of the Atlanta Campaign. Johnston had withdrawn to the Marietta area around June 9. There were a series of small engagements, but Confederates inflicted some 750 casualties on troops of the 20th Corps who tried and failed to storm positions on Pine Mountain on June 15, and Johnston held on until forced to pull back from the area in early July. The position is perhaps best known, however, for the death of Confederate corps commander Leonidas Polk, who was killed on June 14 by a federal artillery round while surveying federal positions and dispositions from the heights.

This was recovered by Syd Kerksis, one of the legendary early relic hunters and collectors, author of books on military belt plates and Civil War projectiles and comes with his original paper storage envelope bearing his ink notation on the location of the find, the date “Apr[il] [19]56,” his abbreviation US CBP for US cartridge box plate, and the specific location, “Lines 20th AC.”

The plate is the regulation 1839 pattern oval U.S. cartridge box plate used throughout the Civil War and is in very good excavated condition. The face shows as brown with some gray and light brown in places around the rim, with good definition to the letters and a good rim, with just a few small dings to the letters. The iron loops are in place on the back, though showing rust, and the lead solder fill is a light gray with level surface showing just some rust stains and few shallow losses near the edge.

These regulation Union accoutrement plates were both ornamental and served a practical purpose in keeping the flap of the cartridge box down even if the soldier neglected to latch it in the heat of action. This one is in very good condition with good provenance to a critical campaign and an early and respected collector and author.  [sr][ph:L]
