This excavated plate has a brass face with beautiful smooth brown patina. The detail on the eagle is good. Painted on the face in white is “WILDERNESS, VA.” There is some slight edge damage and a small crease visible on the right edge; none of which detracts from the appearance. The reverse has most of the lead fill. There are cracks in the lead around the edge from ground freeze, and some loss of lead where the crease is visible on the front, likely from a shovel ding. Both iron hooks remain, are rusty, and remain strong.
Label on back states, “#18 – Purchased from J Parsley of Poolsville, Md. 3-27-82 found it in the Wilderness, Va., on the site of Grant’s Left flank.”
A nice “dug” breast plate. [jet] [ph:L]
