This is an excavated .58 caliber Shaler patent bullet.
Ruben & Ira Shaler received patent #36,197 on August 12, 1862 for their three-piece sectional bullet. In theory, the pieces separated after exiting the barrel making “one man equal to three.” However, the separate sections were inaccurate. There are three different nose segments and three different base segments that can be found in various combinations. The middle segment is fairly uniform in all combinations.
The Northern Ordnance Department placed just two orders for a total of 300,000 of these rounds during the Civil War.
This specimen is the “type C” and features the tall, pointy nose segment with a raised band, and a solid base piece. The three pieces are all in good condition with no dings or dents. Mottled tan/gray patina.
