This absolutely unique item is composed of twenty-nine veteran ribbons associated with the 89th New York Infantry. Twenty-five of the ribbons are attributed to annual reunion events, while one is a non-descript silk flag design, another is a Sons of Veterans ribbon, and three are associated with related New York veteran association and GAR events. The body of the piece is blue silk with an internal panel of cotton ticking material - perhaps a section of an antique window valance. The twenty-nine ribbons are stitched to the front in a mostly-symmetrical pattern, while pieces of colorful silk fill out the design along the edges. The 89th New York was also nicknamed the “Dickinson Guard” – which is prominently stamped over a ribbon at right center. The 89th New York saw a bit of the worst of every aspect of the Civil War’s Eastern Theater – from the Maryland Campaign, down to the Carolinas, and the final campaign against Richmond. Dimensions are 18.5” by roughly 19”+ (not uniform along bottom edge). A subtle pin/tack hole is noted at each corner; a remnant of years of display.
Among Union veteran items, this is surely one of the more creative ones. [cm] [ph:L]
