This felted beaver chapeau could date as early as 1808 and no later than 1820. It is right on for the War of 1812. The sides of hat are tied to crown with cord. There is a wonderful black lacquered leather fan cockade, a unique American design, and below this is a 4" long gold bullion double strand of gold braid connecting to a plain brass button. The circumference of the chapeau front and back is bound with 3/4-inch gold bullion braid or tape. The interior of hat presents a partial black patent leather sweatband which about 40% intact and a glazed cotton liner about 60% intact. The overall height is 8 12 inches in the rear and 8 inches in the front. From side to side, it is 16 inches. The overall condition is very fine with little wear and no losses on the hat's exterior. There is a name inked on the interior lining "W. M. Mansur". This name has not been researched.
It can be assumed that the chapeau was militia used. This is made manifest by the gold braid and the plain "coin button". If the button was artillery the hat would be acceptable as US artillery of the Regular Army and from the War of 1812. (The US infantry for the greater part of the War of 1812 had silver facings). As a militia chapeau it could be either artillery, infantry, cavalry etc. This is museum quality, and a form highly sought after and rarely found. [pe] [ph:L]
