This private purchase cap looks early to mid-war in style. Made of dark blue wool it reaches a height of 4 inches in front and 6 inches up the seam in the back. Both machine and hand sewn, it is filled between its exterior and the brown, formerly black, excellent condition polished cotton lining with raw cotton. This technique is common on Confederate made caps but rarely seen on Northern made products. One may conclude that this cap was made by a tailor in a Southern occupied city like Norfolk, Virginia.

The patent leather visor is 2 inches deep and 7 inches long it is bound on its perimeter with patent leather tape. There is a heavy fold of blue wool under the interior edge of the visor seamline.  The 1/2-inch-high functioning chinstrap is held firmly in place by 2 enlisted man's eagle buttons. The inset disc on the crown has a diameter of 5 inches.  The brown/maroon patent leather sweat band is hand whipped into place and is 1 3/4 inches in height. Its condition is excellent but stiff from age.

Astutely hand sewn to the top of the cap's disc is a wool 5th Corps badge which is powder blue in color and therefore represents the 3rd Division of the Army of the Potomac. Mounted on this, and pinned through, is the metallic silver number "76"; this therefore can only be the 76th New York Infantry. Please follow this link (76th New York Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War). The 76th joined the 5th Corps in March of 1864 when the 1st Corps was dissolved. And it did not become a part of the 3rd Brigade until September of that year. One however must not conclude that this cap was made after September of 1864. It is more probable, based on its early style, that the orange badge of the 4th Division 5th Corps was switched out. And it is not impossible that this cap bore the badge of the 1st Corps prior to this.

That said, this is a wonderful piece of Union Civil War headgear in superior condition. It was formerly on display at the Texas Civil War Museum in Fort Worth.  [pe][ph:L]
