This is an original Civil War officer’s sash in very good condition.
Worn by officers in most of the branches of the United States Army, the waist sash was a common uniform accoutrement that signified a symbol of authority in the military during both field operations and camp duty. The sash, when worn over the frock coat, was wrapped around the waist and looped on the left side. The officer’s leather sword belt was worn over the sash.
This specimen still exhibits a rich, vibrant maroon color and is approximately 4” wide and 110” long including the tassels at the ends. The tassels are 7 ½” long themselves. The tassels exhibit some minor wear. Some scattered, very minor soiling.
Civil War sashes are becoming difficult to find. This is a good specimen for any display. [jet] [ph:L]
