Very rarely see Pattern 1878 Home Service helmet and uniform coat to an NCO of the Canadian engineers. The dark blue helmet has a cork interior and bears the large badge of the Royal Engineers. Very much looking like the artillery pattern but without the cannon. In this case rather than the standard spiked top this one has the original ball mounted which means this engineer had an association with the artillery. This of course screws off and a conventional spike may be substituted. The helmet's condition is outstanding and complete inside and out.

The wonderful regulation non-commissioned officer's red frock coat bears sergeant strips on the left arm only which is correct. The collar and cuffs are faced with black velvet. The buttons show Queen Victoria's cypher or "VR" and additionally read "Canadian Militia Engineers". The buttons are all sewn with the original thread. The condition inside and out is about perfect. At one time there was with the above an un-named, as issued, silver British "Northwest Canada" campaign medal with "Saskatchewan" bar. This was sadly sold away from the 2 items here offered. The medal commemorated the Riel Rebellion of 1885 when the Metis Rebellion was put down by Canadian forces which included the Northwest Mounted Police. Canada's Indian war!

Truly two great items that have always been together and were found in Western Canada.  [pe] [ph:L]
