These trousers are the saxony blue color adopted by the US army about 1885 as a solution to the instability and varying shades of the lighter blue trousers. They have the single hip pocket on the right side introduced in 1882 and the side-seam front pockets re-introduced in 1884. There is a V-shaped vent in the rear of the waistband and an adjusting belt set just below it. In addition to the hip and side pockets there is a small watchpocket on the right front set in the lower seam of the waist band. The buttons are typical black enameled stamped buttons with four holes and stippled outer band. The waist fastens with one; the fly has four slightly smaller; and there are six suspender buttons. All the pockets are in place and the lining of the waist band is complete and intact with just minor stains or soiling. The cuffs are unlined. There is no moth damage. We see just one short ½” tear on rear inside rear of the left cuff- with no fabric missing. In addition to the suspender buttons, the waist is fitted with four belt loops. To our knowledge these did not appear until 1903/04, so we would date the trousers somewhere between that date and 1917 when the army stopped issuing the blue dress uniform. We see no markings in the trousers, usually on the waist band lining, so we take these to be private purchase or possibly state issue. Disregarding the small tear on the cuff edge, which is easily mended, these are in excellent condition.     [sr][ph:L]
