Once in the famed museum collection of Ray Richey, this Confederate mid-gray infantry overcoat or greatcoat is all original and in very good condition all things considered. The hand sewn overcoat is close to the antebellum US regulations but a Confederate variant. It is very rare!

This unidentified overcoat is single breasted and was fastened by 6 buttons down the front (five remain). The second and sixth are script Confederate infantry "I" made by S. Isaacs Campbell & Co. The third is civilian and made of bone. The fourth is a Virginia state seal made by Horstmann in Philadelphia before the war while the fifth is a Yankee eagle button. All appear to have been sewn with matching cotton thread at the same time and all have matching patinas. There is a two-piece belt on the rear waist adjusting by 2 buttons. One remains, and it is a script "I" made by Isaac Campbell & Co.

The gray cape is unlined, and it is sewn at the base of a standing collar. This stand-up collar is 3 1/4 inches tall with a buttonhole at the base, the button is missing. The cape fastens in front with 2 buttons one a Virginia state seal and below this a script Confederate infantry "I" button. It has a raw edge and comes down to about the soldier’s elbow. The bottom edge of the overcoat's skirt is left raw when made . At the bottom front there are 2 whip stitched buttonholes to facilitate closure if desired. The bottom is frayed and worn with losses, this is to be expected, and it actually has the great look of real service wear.

The sleeves with 4-inch turn-back cuffs were not lined. The upper body only is lined in white flannel. This shows great wear and several losses. The interior and exterior seams are tight, and the coat is solid and has scattered moth nips overall that do not affect soundness or the overall integrity of the overcoat. There are scattered larger losses from age, insect and wear, all to be expected.  With this great greatcoat comes a "Treatment Report" from Textile Preservation Associates, Inc.

Likely worn by a Virginia soldier this is only the third CS overcoat this compiler has seen for sale in the past 60 years.   [pe][ph:L]
