Lot contains 10 ribbons commemorating the 5th and 6th Michigan Cavalry’s that were both apart of the famed Michigan Brigade under the command of Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer.  Two of the ribbons are dedicated to the 5th Michigan and the rest are to the 6th.  The 5th Michigan mustered into service on August 30, 1862 and mustered out on June 23, 1865, while the 6th Michigan mustered into service on October 13, 1862 and mustered out on November 24, 1865.  While entering detail just months apart, both followed similar battle trajectories.  More famously the units were at Gettysburg at East Cavalry Field under the command of Custer as an attachment of the 3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of Potomac.  They assisted in quelling Confederate forces and prevent reinforcements from reaching town on July 3, 1863.  Following Gettysburg, they were engaged at Falling Waters, Manassas Junction, Mine Run Campaign, the Overland Campaign, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Winchester, Cedar Creek, and Appomattox.

Ribbons are in fair condition with minor fraying and tears.  All ribbons are composed of gold silk with black lettering with the exception of one that has a top brass pin and red lettering.  Ribbons range in size from 4” to 6 ¾” long, and an 1 ½” to 2” wide.  [mc] [ph:L]
