This piece of Civil War veteran memorabilia is in excellent condition and comes to us as part of a Monroe County-specific collection of GAR and associated items. A button pin with a celluloid coating features a portrait photo of General Elisha Gaylord Marshall, surrounded by two decorative layers of border patterning. A ribbon is suspended from a mounting bar on the reverse of the pin and reads “MONROE COUNTY CIVIL WAR VETERANS ASSN. / MAPLEWOOD, JULY 26, 1919.” The ribbon shows no signs of wear or damage and is trimmed with a layer of gold thread. The reverse sides of both pieces of the badge are blank. Overall measurements are 1.2” x 4.25”.
Born in Seneca Falls, New York, Elisha Marshall graduated from West Point in 1850, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry and was assigned to frontier duty. In 1863, he served at Forts Hamilton and Richmond in New York and as Brigade Commander of the Provisional Brigade during the Battle of the Wilderness, May, 1864. While leading a brigade at the Battle of the Crater, Petersburg on July 30, 1864, he was captured and was held at Columbia Military Prison in South Carolina. Upon his release from prison in April 1865, he assumed command of the 1st Brigade defending Washington, D.C. for the remainder of the war. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on June 16, 1865. He retired at the rank of Colonel in the regular army in 1867 and passed away in 1883. [cm] [ph:L]
