Box meas. approx. 5.00 x 2.75 x 1.00 and is made a thick black cardboard material.
Outer flap has gold lettering that reads “24TH NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT G.A.R. BOSTON, MASS. AUG. 12TH TO 16TH, 1890.” Bottom of the flap has a latch tab that closes around a small white metal finial. Finial shows some wear but is solid.
Lifting the lid exposes two small paper photographs of veterans. On the left is Russell A. Alger who was Commander-in-Chief of the GAR and on the right George H. Innis, Commander Department of Massachusetts. Between the two photographs in gold ink is “COMPLIMENTARY BANQUET TO THE DELEGATES OF THE 24TH NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT G.A.R. BOSTON, AUG. 14, 1890.”
The inside of the box is lined with red paper. Reverse shows the remains of a missing loop.
Russell A. Alger served in the 2nd, 5th and 6th Michigan Cavalry, was wounded twice and captured once. He finished the war as a brevet major general. He also served as Governor of Michigan and as Secretary of War under President McKinley.
George H. Innis served as a private in the 10th Massachusetts Light Artillery from 1862-1865. [ad][ph:L]
