This is the badge portion of the 42nd Annual Reunion badge of the United Confederate Veterans, held in Richmond in June 1932. The top, pinback bar for these was a representation of the “CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE,” popularly known as Battle Abbey, a wide, colonnaded building, envisioned as a museum and shrine to the Confederacy, and now operating as the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, from which this portion was suspended by a red and white ribbon. This main portion features a statue of Robert E. Lee, posed with sword and binoculars, hat in his right hand and a cannonball at his left foot, looking off to the viewer’s right, in front of several flags on upright, spearpoint staffs. A shield-shaped red and blue enameled Confederate battleflag is at bottom center, perhaps indicating a flag-draped plinth on which the statue stands. The upper edges have raised foliate motifs, and the lower edge shows a ribbon scroll with “42nd ANNUAL REUNION” at left and “U.C.V.” at right. This is in very good condition, with no losses to the red and blue. The badge bears a Chicago maker’s mark in small, raised letters on the reverse. [sr][ph:m]
