This is a strong condition WW2 German K98 Mauser bayonet numbered “7802 / q” on blade and on the scabbard, with the letter indicating the batch or block designation and the number indicating the particular piece within the batch, limited to four digits. The blade, guard, pommel, visible blade tang, and screw heads have good, deep blue. The top grip strap has some slight rubbing, lightening the color very slightly. There are some scattered, minute brown spots. The edge of the guard has some superficial scratches not affecting the color. The pommel has a matching pair of eagle/numerical stamps. The wood grips have a warm brown color and good finish with only some minor handling dings and one very tiny chip on the reverse near the guard. The edge and point are good. The scabbard shows more use, with some thin brown mixed with blue on the body, a band of crusty brown on the obverse a third of the way down, below the frog hook, and crusty around the scabbard tip on both sides. The blade is crisply stamped “42 cof” on the obverse, indicating 1942 manufacture by Waffenfabrik Carl Eickhorn. It is good to find the bayonet with its orginal scabbard even if the condition differs a bit. In this case the scabbard protected the bayonet well. [sr] [ph:L]
