A very nice World War One U.S. helmet with original rough sand finish, complete liner and chinstrap, with the tightening instruction label still there, showing an original painted red Keystone, 28th Division insignia. The red keystone insignia was officially adopted as a shoulder patch Oct. 27, 1918. There is considerable debate among collectors about when and by which divisions such insignia was applied to helmets – pre-Armistice or post-Armistice. Overall, in any case, this shows just enough wear to indicate it was issued and worn.
The division had originally been organized from Pennsylvania National Guard units with elements seeing service in Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and the Mexican Border. It was drafted into federal service for World War One in August 1917, arrived in Europe in May 1918, trained with the British and first saw action at Chateau-Thierry in July. The division was involved in the Meuse-Argonne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne including the Battle of Fismes and Fismette, Oise-Aisne, and Ypres-Lys (FA) operations. During the war, it took a total of 14,139 casualties: 2,165 killed and 11,974 wounded. [sr] [ph:L]
